The Bum

I was sittin’ in a drive through at a burger joint
When my wife turned her head and started to point at a strange lookin’ man who was headin’ our way.
He walked up to our window and knocked three times
And asked if we could spare a few dimes
“Ya’ see I’m from out of town and have no way home, man.”
What a load of bull! What a pack of lies!
I’ve heard the same ‘ol story from the same old guy. He goes door to door, he’ll flag ya down,
I see that joker ride’ his bike all over town,
He asks for money to fuel his car,
But the only fuel he buys comes from a bar.
Well that same ol’ fella’ hit me up the other day Chased me on his bike; there was no escape! I tried to lose him, but he kept findin’ a way.
Then he said, “Look at my hands, man, see how they shake
Ya know it’s been a couple of days, you know, since I last ate. You mind if you give a five or ten or maybe even a 20. You know how the prices keep goin’ up, man!”
What a load of bull! What a pack of lies!
I’ve heard the same ‘ol story from the same old guy. He goes door to door, he’ll flag ya down,
I see that joker ride his bike all over town,
The reason his hand shakes is not for lack of food It’s because he’s in love with Mr. Booze!
I went to college and got a degree
He dropped out of high school and hit the street Now he makes more in a day than I make in a week!
What a load of bull! What a pack of lies!
I’ve heard the same ‘ol story from the same old guy. He goes door to door, he’ll flag ya down,
I see that joker ride his bike all over town,
He asks for money to fuel his car,
But the only fuel he buys comes from a bar.

Early in the mornin’ I get out of bed,
Rub a grubby hand through my head, Stagger to a mirror, put my crazy face on Then it time to put on my uniform,
It’s hard work, not workin’!
Then I grab a wrinkly shirt, throw it on my chest, Some holey pants, an old tuxedo vest,
Some fingerless gloves, an old knit hat
On top of that an old ball cap.
It’s hard work, not workin’!
My tools of trade are an old pushcart That I found at the local K-mart
A piece of cardboard that I like to write on And a sad lookin’ dog that I call Jerome. It’s hard work, not workin’!
I used to work 9 to 5
But me and my boss didn’t quite jive
So now I’m out on my own
Just me, myself, and my dog Jerome
Each day we hit the streets, man its rough on my feet It’s hard work, not workin’!
Now my sign says that I Will Work For Food
But it doesn’t say what kindda’ work I exclude
I don’t do windows, toilets, talk on the phone.
My preferred method is just throw the dog a bone. It’s hard work, not workin’!
On the streets, I’ve got some real tall tales
Of how my life been a living, well
I’ve been down and out, been out of luck
they reach in their pockets and give a few bucks. It’s hard work, not workin’!
I used to work 9 to 5
But me and my boss didn’t quite jive
So now I’m out on my own
Just me, myself, and my dog Jerome
Each day we hit the streets, man its rough on my feet It’s hard work, not workin’!
By the end of the day, I’ve really racked up!
A dirty face is all it took, to make people on the streets turn around and throw some change at me on the ground!
It’s hard work, not workin’!
When night time comes, I change my clothes. Now I look just like a regular Joe.
At the fancy restaurants and the local pubs,
I flash my wad just like the other snobs!
It’s hard work, not workin’!
Then tomorrow comes and I start anew With the same ol’ shirt and messed up doo. I make money on the streets each day, When night time comes I play, play, play! It’s hard work, not workin’!
It’s hard work, not workin’!
It’s hard work, not workin’!

Me and you
We fit like a glove
One burnt out, old bum One beautiful dove
Romeo
And Juliet
Two different worlds
It’s a wonder we ever met
‘Cause we’re like
Soup kitchens and Cadillac’s Two things so different
Two things so right
Soup Kitchens and Cadillac’s Like night and day
Like time and space
Me and you
What do you mean?
I’m just a girl
Why are you staring at me?
Mr. please, Please, go away,
If you come any closer I’ll use my mace!
‘Cause we’re like
Soup kitchens and Cadillac's Two things so different
Two things not alike
Soup Kitchens and Cadillac’s Like night and day
Like time and space
