about

This is a massive Prog Rock song based on the entire book of Jonah. I have worked on and off on this one tune for almost a year and a half.

lyrics

I. The Word of the Lord Part I

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah
Said “Arise and go to Nenevah
Go and tell them what I say
‘Cause their wickedness has shown.
They’re so wicked. Pure Evil.

But Jonah didn’t go to Nineveh
Instead the went to Tarshish
He found himself floatin’ on a boat
In the middle of a storm.
Yeah he ran in fear, floatin’ on a boat
In a Storm.

II. The Ship

The wind blew and the rain it fell
The sailors aboard, they began to wail
Prayers to their gods of the raging sea
But the wind and the rain it did not cease.

Then they went down below and they found ole Joanah
Fast asleep lyin in a corner
The captain said arise and pray
And maybe your god will come and save the day

Then Jonah said it’s ‘cause of me the storm is here
I turned from God and I ran in fear
Throw me overboard and I guarantee
This big ol’ storm will suddenly cease

So they did as they were told and they tossed him overboard
Then each of the men thye prayed to the Lord
The waters calmed and the rain it ceased
The will of God was now appeased

III. The Funky Fish

IV. Nowhere to Run

Then out of the depths came the mighty whale
Eyes fixed on Jonah it began to inhale
The waters rushed and the winds roared
The angles looked on and the albatross soared
Nowhere to go Nowhere to run
Our man Jonah thought he was done

V. Jonah's Prayer

From inside the whale Jonah prayed to the Lord
(And he said)
In my distress I called to the Lord
(And He answered me)
From the depths of the grave I called for help
(And you heard my cry)
You hurled me into the deepest sea
(The very heart of the sea)

The oceans grabbed me, had me by the throat
(And it held on tight)
I was as far down as a body can go
(The gates were slamming shut)

Yet you pulled me up, from that grave alive
(From the depths of Sheol)
When I was in need you answered me
(You called me by my Name)

Ah…Ahh…Ahhchoo!

VI. The Word of the Lord Part II

Then Jonah went flying through the air,
And to his dispare,
He found himself just a three days walk from the town of Ninevah!
Right back where he started, from the beginning!

Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah
Said “Arise and go to Nenevah
Go and tell them what I say
‘Cause their wickedness has shown.
They’re so wicked. Pure Evil.

In forty days Nenevah will fall!

VII. Nenevah's Response

Let neither man nor beast nor bird nor herd
Eat or drink for it is God we have perturbed.

VIII. Nenevah Repents

Let man beast be covered in sack cloth
And with a mighty cry call out to God
Let everyone turn out from their evil ways
And put aside the violence their hands have made
Oh who can tell if God will turn and relent?
You better fall on your knees Nenevah and repent!

IX. Jonah Pouts

I knew this would happen, right from the start
For you O Lord have a merciful heart.
Your slow to anger and abundant in love
You wont do harm to those who deserve to die for their wickedness they have sown.
You O Lord just Ya just love ‘em all
So please O Lord take my life from me
For it is better to die than to see what I see!

X. God's Response

Up the mountain, Jonah he did go
Deep the ground God’s hand reached and sowed
A vine that would cover Jonah’s head
So he would have shade for his bed.

But late that night a worm made its way
To the vine that had just grown that day
It took one bite and then another
Before the sun rose, the vine had withered.

Jonah arose and found his vine was dead
The sun was hot beating down on his head
He became faint, his knees gave way
“Please O Lord, just take me today!”

Then God said, “Jonah, why so angry?
You didn’t grow the vine; that was all me.
I grew it in a day and took it in a night.
Why do you continue to test my might?

Why O Jonah do you care more for a tree
Than all the people in that great city?
How can you say I’m wrong to lift my mighty hand and spare this repentant land?”
And with these words our story comes to an end with Jonah mad and alone atop a mountain
No happiness, no joy, no peace of mind,
Just bitter contempt for his fellow mankind

But Nineveh, that’s a different story!
To God they give all the glory,
For sending one ungrateful profit to tell them of their wrongs,
They now lift god up in all their songs!

So in the end know that God will have his way no matter what it is you have to say!
Just follow his word with a pure mind and heart and avoid the belly of the fish right from the start.
